Switch And Data Introduces New Philadelphia Commercial Internet Exchange Point
Dandy Connections, DCANet, FASTNET and SNiP Initiate New Internet Exchange To Improve Local Traffic Efficiencies
TAMPA, FL - December 9, 2003 -
Switch and Data, the leading neutral interconnection and colocation
provider, today announced that it has established a new regional
Internet exchange in Philadelphia. Five charter members have signed
contracts to participate in this exchange. This collaborative effort is
another important step in Switch and Data’s continuing drive to enhance
its leadership position of regional exchange points and distributed
peering networks.
The charter participants of this new exchange point include Dandy
Connections, Inc., DCANet, FASTNET Corporation and SNiP. By
establishing this regional exchange point in the Philadelphia area,
local enterprises and Internet companies will reduce their network
deployment costs and improve network efficiency. These companies will
no longer be dependant on the local loop and transport costs which are
required to move traffic to the crowded New York, Washington D.C. and
Chicago area exchange points. Participants can now greatly improve
network efficiency by keeping their local traffic within the
Philadelphia area. Switch and Data’s Philadelphia facility hosts over
51 unique telecommunications carriers, IP providers, content delivery
network providers and enterprises.
“We see this metro as a significant market with a strong presence
and mix of regional networks and enterprises,” said Jim Weller, Vice
President of Business Development, Switch and Data. “We applaud the
pioneering efforts of all of our participants.”
“The ability for us to publicly peer is a great advantage to us,”
said Anthony Abate, President and CTO, SNiP. “The Philadelphia facility
has a robust customer base and a comprehensive network of private
interconnections. Adding a public peering infrastructure to our
interconnection options gives everyone here a new and more cost
effective way to exchange traffic with one another.”
“Switch and Data’s diverse customer base in this facility lends
itself to a lot of interconnection opportunities,” said Phil Banh,
Manager of Network Operations, DCANet. “What they (Switch and Data)
have done is given companies a choice in how they interconnect with
each other.”
