What is a search engine?

A search engine is a database of extraordinary proportion that stores and categorizes web pages that are throughout the Internet. This is the 'card catalog' of the Internet.

The way it works is you type in a phrase relating to the subject you are looking for and it will find the closest matches. For example, if I were looking for information on the city of Philadelphia, I would type in: Philadelphia PA

When you type in a phrase such as Philadelphia PA, it is best to use quotes. This will ensure that when your results load it will be a closer match to what you are looking for. To force a phrase to be included in the search engine results use a '+' sign. Conversely, use a '-' sign to filter out all pages that have that particular phrase or keyword. For example, to search for information about Philadelphia, not including information about cheese steaks type the following:

+"Philadelphia PA"-"cheese steak"

There are numerous search engines throughout the Internet, but no search engine can keep track of all the pages out there. If the information you are looking for cannot be found on the search engine you are using, try another one!

Some points to consider when searching the web:
Do you know what topic the information is related to?
Do you know a specific name or title of a web page?
